American Eagle's Garden Flower Dress.
TCW Fashion Writer (and shopaholic) Hayley Phelan discovers how to stay on trend AND stay up to date with the rent .  Here are her top five affordable picks to update your wardrobe for spring.

I have recently become a reformed shopper. Or maybe recovering is the right word. Either way, I’ve decided that I am going to be cutting down, way down, on my wardrobe spending. I know I've said this before, but this time I mean it.  Unfortunately with all those lovely dresses in shop windows, I’ve been getting those inevitable grab-your-wallet urges.  Naturally, the only way to cease temptation is to heed to it, so I’ve found a way to indulge (just a little).

Here is my list of the five best buys for your buck at college budget-friendly stores:

1. American Eagle’s Garden Flower Dress, on sale for $39.95

By now, everyone knows that this season is all about flower power. American Eagle’s interpretation of the trend is both sweet and wearable. The soft pinks and blues lend a romantic feeling while the cut flaunts it where you got it. The cut (inspired by the British tea dress) is similar to Kate Moss for Topshop’s most popular seller, but for half the price and no complicated conversion, our own American Eagle provides the better buy.

2. Gap’s tiny-floral slip tank , on sale for $32.99

If you’re looking to embrace the floral trend in a more minimal way, Gap has turned out a few pieces that are right on trend. No longer the basic Gap we knew as children, the company has embraced a new aesthetic that caters to the young and fashionable (I’m referring to us of course). This floral slip is perfect to wear now under a cardigan or with a scarf, yet it will also look positively adorable worn with skinny jeans or cut-offs when the weather finally warms up!

3. Armani Exchange's Tie Waist Tunic in white, $98

If you’ve ever wished you could channel Mia Farrow in the 1974's The Great Gatsby, this dress could be for you. The short pleated number in white is a little bit tennis, a little bit 1920s and a whole lot of chic.  The optional sash lets you create a waist where you please, and because of the dress's short length, you can wear it over jeans or with tights. I think Mia would approve!

4. Old Navy’s Safari Shirt Dress, on sale for $22.99

Safari style was all over the runway, and for just over twenty bucks it’ll be all over you! The dress looks great in all colors, but I tend to prefer the safari olive, which sticks to my safari fantasy plus looks killer with a tan. What’s so great about this dress is that with just a bit of accessorizing, it can give off a totally different look. Picture it with a floppy hat and wedged sandals, so YSL!  Wear it with tights and tame heels for work, or skip the tights, put on a cool belt and you’ll look hot on a night out.

5. Old Navy’s Women’s Platform Sandals , on sale for $29.50

Witness yet another steal from Gap’s little sister. The company is clearly tapping into something more sophisticated with these platform sandals. I can picture these cuties with just about everything in my closet. Their neutral shade and sturdy heel make them wearable for almost any occasion. Plus, I have it on good authority that they are extremely comfortable. Affordable, chic and comfy? What’s not to like?

As you can see, there are many options out there for trendy, affordable clothing besides knock-off staple stores H&M and Forever 21.  Cutting down on your spending doesn't have to mean cutting down on style.

$98 for a tunic shirt is not really "affordable" for most college students.
